Apple App Store reviews are taking 45 days — the AI vibe-coding flood is the reason
A surge of AI-generated, low-effort app submissions has pushed some Apple App Store review times out to 45 days, and Apple has tightened guideline 4.3(b) to explicitly block apps that 'do not add value' — a direct response to mass-produced AI app-builder output.
11 July 2026
Apple’s App Store review team is drowning. Review times have stretched to as long as 45 days in parts of 2026, driven by a wave of AI-generated submissions — apps built entirely with AI app builders and vibe-coding tools, many of them thin clones of existing categories: dating apps, flashlights, wallpaper packs, simple timers. In response, Apple updated guideline 4.3(b) to explicitly block new submissions in oversaturated categories unless they offer a “meaningfully different or improved” experience, and reorganised its developer agreement with new language specifically covering AI and machine-learning-generated software.
The message from Apple is pointed: AI-assisted development is fine, but it isn’t an excuse. The updated guidance is explicit that developers “cannot treat AI-generated software as an excuse for thin functionality, copied interfaces, weak moderation, or unclear data practices.” This lands three weeks after Google made a near-identical move on Play Store quality enforcement — both major platforms are now actively filtering for AI-generated junk rather than treating volume as a neutral fact of the market.
Why this matters for anyone commissioning an app
This is the clearest platform-level evidence yet that “built with AI” and “built well” are not the same claim, and app store gatekeepers are now actively separating the two. A tool that lets anyone generate an app in an afternoon has also produced an afternoon’s worth of quality — and both Apple and Google are now pricing that risk into their review processes. If your app gets caught in a 45-day review queue, or worse, rejected under 4.3(b) for looking like every other AI-generated entry in your category, that’s weeks of lost time and a real cost on top of development.
So what
The bar for approval, discoverability, and user trust is rising for exactly the kind of software that’s easiest to generate quickly and carelessly. Differentiated functionality, real product thinking, and solid engineering underneath the AI-assisted parts of a build now matter more for App Store outcomes, not less. If you’re weighing a fast AI-generated prototype against a properly built product, our custom software development and iOS & Android work is built to clear that bar, not just get something submitted — get in touch if you want a second opinion before you build.
