Google Play's 15 July policy update quietly pulls AI features into its data rules
Google Play's latest policy announcement, published 15 July, extends existing User Data requirements to cover third-party AI integrations explicitly for the first time, alongside new minors-protection rules for chat apps and a hard deadline of 31 August to hit the latest target API level — three changes worth checking against any Android app with an AI feature or a compliance clock already running.

Google Play published a policy announcement on 15 July with three changes worth separating out. First, and most relevant if your app has any kind of AI-powered feature: Play’s existing User Data policy — the rules governing what you collect, how you disclose it, and what you’re allowed to do with it — now explicitly states that those requirements “also apply to third-party AI integrations.” If your app calls out to a chatbot, an AI assistant, or any third-party model provider and passes it user data, that flow is now unambiguously in scope for the same disclosure and consent rules as any other data sharing, not a grey area.
Second, anonymous and random chat apps face new restrictions aimed at protecting minors, alongside a related change removing phone-call verification via the READ_CALL_LOG permission — developers are being pushed toward the Digital Credentials API or SMS Retriever API instead. Third, and unrelated to AI specifically: every app on Play needs to be built against the latest target API level by 31 August 2026, with developers given the usual 30-day window from the 15 July announcement to comply with the other changes.

None of these are dramatic on their own, but together they’re a reminder that “we bolted an AI chatbot onto our app” is now a compliance decision, not just a product one — Google is closing the gap where AI features could quietly sidestep data rules that apply to everything else.
