Anthropic started rolling out a merged “one Claude” experience on 16 September 2026, folding Claude Cowork — the separate workspace it launched earlier this year for business and operations tasks — back into the main Claude chat interface. Alongside the merge, Anthropic launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides for drafting documents and presentations, plus a Claude Design mode that works directly inside a normal conversation, all in beta on paid plans. The rollout starts with Pro and Max subscribers, extends to Team and Free plans shortly after, and reaches Enterprise customers only after 30 days’ notice to administrators. Claude Code stays separate, as the dedicated surface for software development.
Anthropic’s own explanation is candid about why: users didn’t know which tool to pick for a given task, and work didn’t carry over cleanly when they switched between Cowork and standard chat. That’s a familiar failure mode across the AI tool market this year — vendors shipped specialised surfaces fast during the “vibe coding” boom, then spent the following months merging them back together once real usage data showed people just wanted one place to work.
