Google Play just let a rival app store in the front door — Aptoide Games goes live inside the Play Store
As of 10 August 2026, Android users in the US can discover and install Aptoide Games directly through the Google Play Store — the first rival storefront to appear inside Play itself, the practical outcome of Google's multi-year antitrust fight with Epic Games.

Google Play’s app-stores-within-the-app-store rollout stopped being theoretical on 10 August 2026. Aptoide Games, a mobile game marketplace, is now discoverable and installable directly through Google Play in the US — no more downloading an APK from a browser and clicking past Android’s security warnings. Google added a dedicated app stores section to the Play Store, though Aptoide is currently the only listing there.
The legal trail behind this is long: Epic sued Google in 2020 after Fortnite was pulled for bypassing Google’s 30% payment commission, a 2023 jury found Google violated antitrust law, and a 2024 court order required Google to open up rival store distribution. Google tried to settle rather than comply outright in 2025; the judge wasn’t satisfied, and the settlement was withdrawn. What’s live now is the court-ordered version, not a negotiated one. Epic’s own store and Microsoft’s Xbox mobile marketplace are both expected to follow the same path onto Play.
So what
For anyone commissioning or running an Android app, this doesn’t change how you build anything — but it does change the distribution landscape you’re planning against. A second, then third, viable discovery channel inside Android’s biggest storefront means app store optimisation and payment strategy decisions that assumed “Google Play is the only door” need revisiting over the next year, not urgently but deliberately. If you’re weighing what a more fragmented Android distribution picture means for a build you’re planning, our iOS & Android development team can help you think it through, or get in touch to talk it over.
