Microsoft is folding GitHub Copilot into one 'super app' with the rest of Copilot
Satya Nadella has confirmed Microsoft is merging Copilot Chat, GitHub Copilot, Copilot Cowork and its new Autopilot agent system into a single unified app during 2026 — a response to internal data showing fewer than 4.5% of Microsoft 365's 450 million seats have converted to a paid Copilot add-on.

Microsoft is building a single Copilot app to replace its current sprawl of separate products, CEO Satya Nadella confirmed on an earnings call this month. Copilot Chat, GitHub Copilot, Copilot Cowork and a new agentic layer called Autopilot are being consolidated into one app with a toggle between a personal account and a business or Microsoft 365 instance, rather than four products a user has to choose between and switch across.
The driver is adoption, not ambition. An internal audit reportedly found that fewer than 4.5% of Microsoft 365’s 450 million seats have converted to a paid Copilot add-on, and Microsoft’s own research points to customer confusion — people can’t tell what’s different between the various Copilot products, so they don’t pay for any of them. The merged app is being framed as a cut, not just a rebrand: underused features including Copilot Podcasts and Copilot Labs are being discontinued, and the new Autopilot agent tier will carry its own pricing.
For anyone whose team has standardised on GitHub Copilot specifically as “the” coding assistant, the relevant detail is that it’s about to stop being a distinct product with its own identity and pricing, and become one surface inside a much bigger consumer-and-enterprise app aimed at a completely different, much larger buyer base. That’s a meaningfully different thing to have wired into procurement, security review and developer workflow than the GitHub-specific tool teams evaluated and bought.
