UK AI vacancies up 42% in a year: hire the team or commission the build?
UK tech vacancies rose 4.3% year on year in Q2 2026 while AI roles grew 41.8%, per APSCo and CV-Library data. Founders searching for AI developers in the UK face a hiring squeeze that makes a software partner more attractive.
7 October 2026
UK tech employers advertised 126,861 vacancies in Q2 2026, up 4.3% on a year earlier, according to APSCo and CV-Library data. Within that, AI-related vacancies rose 41.8% and now account for 4.6% of all technology roles advertised. Searches for “hire AI developer UK” and “AI engineer salary” follow the same direction.
What the numbers say
Overall tech hiring is steady, not booming. AI hiring is the part that is accelerating. Every company moving AI from pilot to production is competing for the same small pool of people who have shipped AI features, not just experimented with them.
What it means for buyers
Three practical consequences for a founder or product lead:
- Time to hire is the real cost. A role that takes four months to fill is four months of roadmap lost, before salary is counted.
- Specialists are scarce, generalists are not. Teams with strong general engineers who use AI coding tools well can deliver much of what is needed. The scarce skill is evaluation, safety and production reliability for AI features.
- Hiring one person creates a single point of failure. One AI engineer leaving can stall the product.
Hire or commission?
Hire when AI is your core product and you will be iterating on it for years. Commission when you need a working, tested AI feature inside an existing product in months, or when you want to learn what you actually need before committing to a permanent team. Many companies do both: a partner builds and hands over, and a smaller in-house team takes it from there.
So what
Before opening an AI engineer role, write down the one feature it must deliver in the first ninety days. If that can be specced, it can probably be commissioned. BuildApps builds and hands over production AI features as part of AI-assisted development, and custom software development for products that need more than one feature. To discuss scope, start a project.
