UK tech hiring just split in two — AI-linked and senior roles are up, junior developer roles are still shrinking
Indeed's UK jobs data, published 2 August 2026, shows software developer postings rising 14% overall — but the growth is concentrated in senior and AI-linked roles, with around two-thirds of employers cutting entry-level hiring specifically because AI tools now absorb junior-level work.

Indeed’s UK labour market data, published 2 August 2026, shows software developer job postings up 14% — a genuine recovery for a profession that’s seen dramatic losses since 2022. But the headline number hides a split. Indeed’s senior economist Jack Kennedy described it as a “two-speed” market: demand is concentrating around experienced workers and roles directly connected to AI, rather than flowing evenly through the profession. AI-related job postings are growing at more than three times the average rate across all UK job categories, and AI-related terms now appear in roughly 5.6% of UK postings — a higher share than the US, Germany, France, Canada, or Australia.
The other side of that split: around two-thirds of employers report scaling back entry-level hiring specifically because AI tools are now absorbing work that used to go to junior staff — first-line support and junior development tasks in particular. This isn’t a new trend on its own; it continues a pattern this site has tracked through the year (junior developer hiring decline, the freelance market shrinking, the widening AI wage premium). What’s new here is the framing: it’s not a uniform downturn, it’s a bifurcation, with senior and AI-fluent roles pulling away from everything else.
So what
For anyone commissioning software rather than building an internal team, this is the clearest data point yet for why: the UK talent market increasingly rewards senior, AI-fluent capability and is actively shedding the junior capacity that used to make in-house teams cost-effective for smaller builds. Hiring a junior-heavy team is now a harder, pricier proposition than it was two years ago, and the skills gap between “knows how to prompt an AI coding tool” and “knows how to review, architect, and ship what it produces” is exactly where senior judgement earns its keep. That’s the gap a commissioned team with senior engineers and mature AI-assisted workflows is built to close — see our services or get in touch to talk through a project.
