xAI has moved from AI coding tool user to AI coding tool vendor. Grok 4.5, positioned by xAI as built specifically for coding-heavy, multi-step technical work, is now available directly inside GitHub Copilot — across VS Code, the Copilot CLI, and Copilot’s cloud agents — giving Copilot’s existing user base a new model option alongside whatever Microsoft’s own Project Polaris delivers as the default. xAI is also shipping Grok Build, a standalone coding agent in the same mould as Claude Code or Cursor’s agent mode, with steady workflow updates to bash permissions, approval flows, and task resumption.
What’s more interesting than the launch itself is the training data. xAI says Grok 4.5 was trained on trillions of tokens of real developer-agent interaction sessions sourced from Cursor — not just public code repositories, but the messy reality of actual coding sessions: failed attempts, debugging loops, follow-up prompts, tool calls, dead ends and corrections. That’s a different training bet to models built primarily on finished, published code, and it’s a bet on the theory that learning how developers actually work matters more than learning what correct code looks like in isolation.
Why this changes the shape of the market, not just the roster
Until now, the AI coding tools conversation has mostly been framed as a choice between a handful of dedicated products — Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Windsurf — each backed by one model, mostly from OpenAI or Anthropic. Grok 4.5 landing inside Copilot alongside Polaris turns Copilot itself into a multi-model marketplace rather than a single-vendor product, following the same pattern Cursor already uses by letting users pick their underlying model. A fourth frontier lab (after OpenAI, Anthropic and Google) now has a coding-specific model competing for the same workloads, and it’s arriving through the widest-distribution channel in the category rather than a standalone product that has to build its own user base from scratch.

For teams already on Copilot, this is another live option worth a real side-by-side test on your own codebase rather than a reason to switch on the strength of a launch announcement — xAI’s own benchmark claims, like Microsoft’s for Polaris, haven’t been independently verified yet.
